Cabarete has been a serious kite destination since the early 2000s. The north coast of the Dominican Republic gets northeast trade winds from December through August, averaging 15 to 25 knots. Kite Beach is the centre of it: a wide, flat beach with side-shore wind, a dedicated teaching zone, and multiple IKO schools operating side by side.

Here is what you need to know about kiteboarding in Cabarete.

The Main Spots

Kite Beach

The primary kite spot in Cabarete. Long beach with consistent side-shore wind and a shallow area for teaching. Multiple IKO-certified schools operate here, including KiteDR. The beach is organised: launching, landing, and teaching zones are separated. If you are coming to learn, this is where you want to be.

Encuentro Beach

A short drive west. Encuentro is a wave beach, not a beginner spot. Experienced riders come here for surf conditions and a different kind of challenge. If you are learning, stay at Kite Beach until you are riding confidently.

Bozo Beach

Between Kite Beach and Encuentro. Mix of flat water and small waves. Quieter than Kite Beach and popular with freestylers who want more open space for tricks.

La Boca

Where the Yasica River meets the ocean, about 40 minutes west of Cabarete. Flat water, minimal crowd, a completely different riding environment. KiteDR runs tour trips here for riders who want to experience downwind conditions and flat-water cruising.

Wind and Season

The main season is December through August. Northeast trade winds average 15 to 25 knots from a side-onshore direction, the safest angle for learning. Wind typically builds through the morning and peaks in the afternoon.

September and October are the lightest months. If your trip is specifically for kiteboarding, avoid those two months or plan a longer stay to account for rest days.

Learning to Kitesurf Here

The IKO beginner course is 9 hours spread across 3 to 4 days. At KiteDR, all beginner instruction is one-on-one or in groups of two maximum. Equipment is included. Most students are riding independently by the end of the course.

Private lessons cost $85 per hour. The full 9-hour beginner package is $630 private or $540 for a group of two.

Equipment Hire

KiteDR provides all equipment during lessons. Once you have your IKO Level 1 certification, equipment hire is available on Kite Beach at around $40 to $60 per session.
