Kiteboarding Lessons in Cabarete: How It Works

KiteDR runs IKO-certified beginner lessons on Kite Beach in Cabarete. The beginner course is 9 hours spread across 3 to 4 days. By the end, most students are riding independently in both directions and hold their IKO Level 1 certification. Here is what the course involves and what to expect.

Why Cabarete Works for Learning

  • Consistent wind: December through August, northeast trade winds average 15 to 25 knots. The most reliable afternoons are April to August when thermal wind reinforces the trades.
  • Safe teaching conditions: Side-onshore wind means the kite pushes you back toward the beach, not out to sea. The teaching zone at Kite Beach is shallow and separated from the main riding area.
  • Warm water: 78 to 82°F year-round. No wetsuit needed.

The IKO Beginner Course: Three Stages

Stage 1: Control and Safety (approx. 3 hours)

Ground school on the beach. Kite theory, safety systems, quick-release procedures, and first flights with a trainer kite. You move to a full-size kite once the theory is solid. No water contact until safety competency is demonstrated.

Stage 2: Body Dragging (approx. 3 to 6 hours)

First water sessions. You learn to control the kite while being dragged through the water, practise relaunching from the surface, and build the muscle memory needed for board recovery. This is the foundation stage – everything else builds on it.

Stage 3: Water Starts (approx. 3 to 9 hours)

Board is introduced. You practise getting onto the board, riding in both directions, and landing safely. Instructors work one-on-one or with a maximum of two students. Completion earns your IKO Level 1 certification card, valid for gear hire at kite schools worldwide.
