KiteDR is a kiteboarding school based on Kite Beach, Cabarete, on the Dominican Republic's north shore. 20 minutes from Puerto Plata airport. All instructors hold active IKO certification, the professional standard for kite instruction in 75 countries.
We teach complete beginners through a structured 9-hour IKO Level 1 course. Intermediate riders get in-water coaching focused on upwind riding, transitions, and confidence. Advanced riders can book filmed sessions to work on jumps and tricks. We also run guided kite tours to three spots around the DR. Operating on Kite Beach since 2014.
Most first-timers show up not knowing what they don't know. So we build the session order around what you actually need to control before you add power. Slow to start. Fast to progress.
Wind window, launch signals, and safety release before you touch the water. Everything else builds on this.
Use the kite to move through the water, recover your board, and control power.
Connect kite power with board position until you get your first real rides.
Refine stance, edge control, upwind direction, and safe riding habits.
Consistent side-onshore trade winds. Warm, waist-deep flat water. A beach that has been producing kite students since the early 2000s. There are cheaper places to take a lesson. None of them have this setup.
No wetsuit. Water temperature sits around 27°C year-round. You spend the full session focused on the kite, not surviving the cold.
We schedule around conditions and match your lesson plan to the day's wind, beach traffic, and your level.

The full 9-hour IKO Level 1 path. What most first-timers book.
For students who already ride and want upwind technique, transitions, or jumps coached properly.

Conditions on Kite Beach shift. Wind drops. Beginners freeze up when the kite pulls harder than expected. KiteDR coaches have been reading Cabarete's wind patterns for years. They know which part of the beach to use at 9am versus 2pm, and what to do when a session needs to change mid-water.
Every session starts on land. Kite control, safety systems, self-rescue. Students who skip this step on other courses are the ones who come to us to relearn the basics.
If conditions shift, we use the time for theory, self-rescue, equipment setup, or rescheduling guidance.
