What Does the 9-Hour Course Actually Include?

The 9-hour beginner course follows the IKO Level 1 curriculum spread across 3 to 4 days. It covers:

  • Kite theory and meteorology
  • Safety systems and self-rescue
  • Body dragging (with and without a board)
  • Water starts
  • First independent rides

At the end you receive IKO Level 1 certification – the internationally recognised standard that lets you hire equipment and ride at kite beaches worldwide. Everything is provided: kite, board, harness, helmet, and impact vest. You bring a swimsuit and sunscreen.

Private or Group: Which Is Worth It?

For most students, private lessons are worth the extra cost. The difference is $90 over a 9-hour course. In exchange you get 100% of your instructor’s attention, which directly translates to faster progression. Shared instruction time means the kite is sometimes with the other student when you want feedback.

Group lessons make sense if you are travelling with a partner and want to share the experience. Two people progressing together can be motivating, and the semi-private format still gives you real coaching.

What About the Total Cost of a Kite Trip to Cabarete?

Lessons are the main cost, but there are a few others to factor in.

Accommodation: Options from around $40 per night (guesthouses near the beach) to $150 and up for boutique hotels. Budget $60 to $100 per night for a decent room within walking distance of Kite Beach.

Food: Eating locally is cheap – $5 to $15 for a full meal. Beachfront restaurants cost more, $15 to $30.

Equipment hire after your course: Once certified and riding independently, equipment hire on Kite Beach costs roughly $40 to $60 per session.

Airport transfer: Puerto Plata International Airport (POP) is about 20 minutes from Cabarete. A taxi costs around $30 to $35 one way.

Is Cabarete Expensive Compared to Other Kite Destinations?

No. Cabarete is one of the better-value destinations for learning to kitesurf. Tarifa in Spain and Dakhla in Morocco are comparable on lesson rates, but accommodation and food costs in Cabarete are lower. Bonaire and Aruba are significantly more expensive overall. The combination of consistent wind, warm water, affordable daily costs, and IKO-standard instruction makes Cabarete strong on value, not just conditions.
