Kids can learn to kitesurf in Cabarete from age 7, provided they weigh at least 40 lbs. KiteDR runs a dedicated junior programme using appropriately sized kites (2m to 5m), one-on-one instruction, and the IKO junior curriculum. Most children complete their first body drags within a single session and ride independently within 9 to 12 hours spread across a few days.
Here is how it works and what to expect as a parent.
What Age Can Kids Start Kiteboarding?
KiteDR accepts junior students from age 7 upwards. The weight requirement (minimum 40 lbs) matters more than the age. Lighter children do not generate enough body resistance to control even a small kite effectively. If your child is on the smaller side at age 7, check with us before booking.
All junior lessons are one-on-one with lead instructor Bryan Betances Martinez, who has been teaching kids on Kite Beach since KiteDR was founded. Sessions are shorter than adult lessons, paced to match children’s concentration, and kept fun throughout.
What Does the Junior Programme Include?
The IKO junior curriculum covers the same skills as the adult beginner course but adapted for younger riders: kite theory, safety systems, body dragging, water starts, and first independent rides. The key differences are:
- Smaller kites (2m to 5m matched to your child’s weight)
- Shorter sessions to match concentration spans
- One-on-one instruction throughout
- Teaching language and pace adjusted for the individual child
- Parents welcome to watch from the beach
All equipment is provided: kite, board, harness (junior sizes available), helmet, and impact vest. Your child needs a swimsuit and sunscreen. A rash guard is recommended.
Children who complete the course receive an IKO junior certification, which is internationally recognised.
Is It Safe?
Yes, when taught correctly. The IKO junior curriculum introduces risk in stages. Your child does not move to the next skill until the current one is solid. The teaching zone on Kite Beach has a sandy bottom, side-shore wind, and shallow water. Bryan holds active IKO certification and adapts the pace to each child.
Every junior student wears a helmet and impact vest for every session. You will be able to watch from the beach.
What Else Is There for Kids in Cabarete?
Not every day will be a kite day, either because of conditions or because your child needs a rest. Cabarete has a handful of good options for families when you are off the water.
Playa Encuentro is a surf beach a short drive west of town, with a beginner-friendly surf school that runs kids camps. Good option for older children who want to try surfing alongside kiteboarding.
Monkey Jungle is a wildlife sanctuary in the hills between Cabarete and Sosua where you can see spider monkeys, capuchins, iguanas, and peacocks up close. About 15 minutes from the beach. Works well as a half-day trip.
Laguna SOV is a family activity park on the north coast with playgrounds, rope courses, and trampolines. Good for younger children, particularly on rest days.
The beach itself is a reliable fallback. Cabarete Beach is calm enough for paddling and swimming in the bay, with vendors and food close by.
Practical Tips for Families
When to go: December to August is peak wind season and the most reliable time for lessons. The water stays warm year-round (78 to 82°F), so there is no bad time for the beach.
How long to stay: Allow at least 5 days for the junior course. Building in a couple of buffer days for conditions or rest is sensible. Most families stay 7 to 10 days.
Getting here: Puerto Plata International Airport (POP) is 20 minutes from Cabarete. Punta Cana (PUJ) is about 3.5 hours. Fly into POP if you can.
Accommodation: Cabarete has options at every price point within walking distance of Kite Beach. Book early for December to February, which fills up quickly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my child learn kiteboarding if they have never tried water sports before?
Yes. No previous experience is needed. The junior programme starts from zero. Comfort in the ocean or open water is the only real requirement.
How much do kids kiteboarding lessons cost?
Junior lessons are one-on-one. Contact KiteDR directly for current pricing and availability, as session packages are tailored to each child’s pace and schedule.
Can parents watch the lesson?
Yes. The teaching zone is clearly visible from the beach. We ask that parents let Bryan lead and avoid calling out instructions during the session.
What if conditions are not suitable on a lesson day?
Sessions are rescheduled at no extra charge when wind is unsuitable. Cabarete rarely has extended calm periods between December and August.
