Getting Started

Before You Book

What experience do I need to start kiteboarding lessons?

No experience is needed. The IKO Level 1 beginner course starts from zero. It runs for 9 hours over 3 to 4 days, covering everything from kite theory to your first independent rides.

Do I need to be able to swim?

Yes. Being comfortable swimming in open water is a firm requirement before getting in the water with a kite. If you are not confident in the ocean, start with some swimming practice first. Kiteboarding takes place in open water and self-rescue depends on being able to manage yourself if things go wrong.

What is the minimum age for kiteboarding lessons at KiteDR?

Children aged 7 and up are welcome in our dedicated kids lessons. The minimum recommended weight is around 40 lbs. There is no upper age limit for adults.

Which airport should I fly into for Cabarete?

Puerto Plata (POP) is the closest airport, around 20 minutes from Cabarete. Santiago (STI) is the next best option. Punta Cana (PUJ) and Santo Domingo (SDQ) both work but involve a much longer drive, Punta Cana is roughly 7 hours by road. Most visitors coming specifically for Cabarete fly into POP or STI.

Is kiteboarding physically demanding?

Not as much as people think. Modern kites do most of the work. A reasonable level of fitness helps, but you do not need to be an athlete. Most students in good health can complete the beginner course comfortably.

What should I bring to my first lesson?

Sunscreen, water, and a swimsuit. We provide the kite, board, harness, helmet, and impact vest. A rash guard is recommended for sun protection, and you can pick one up in our shop if needed.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking at least a week ahead in high season, which runs from December to August. Last-minute spots sometimes open up. WhatsApp us for current availability.

How much do kiteboarding lessons cost at KiteDR?

On the Water

During Your Course

How many students are there per instructor?

A maximum of 2 students per instructor for beginner courses. Intermediate and advanced sessions are typically 1-on-1 for more focused coaching.

What does the 9-hour beginner course include?

The course covers kite theory, meteorology, safety systems, self-rescue, body dragging (with and without a board), water starts, and your first independent rides. All equipment is included.

What happens if the wind isn't good on my lesson day?

We monitor conditions daily. If the wind is insufficient or unsafe, we reschedule at no charge. Cabarete rarely has long windless spells, so delays are uncommon.

Will I get an IKO certificate?

Yes. Completing IKO Level 1 earns you an internationally recognised IKO certification. This lets you hire equipment and access kite beaches worldwide.

Can I learn to kitesurf in one day?

Not to an independent riding standard. The 9 hours are spread over 3 to 4 days so each skill has time to consolidate before you move on to the next stage.

Do I need to bring my own equipment?

No. All equipment is provided for lessons. Equipment hire is available after your course for independent sessions on Kite Beach.

Is kiteboarding safe for beginners?

Yes, when taught correctly. All KiteDR lessons follow the IKO curriculum, which is specifically designed to introduce risk gradually and only progress students when each safety stage is solid. Every student wears a helmet and impact vest. Instructors carry safety knives and are trained in self-rescue and student rescue. Kite Beach in Cabarete is a well-established teaching spot with consistent side-shore wind and no hazards close to the launch zone. The most important safety tool is a qualified instructor, which is why we do not allow students to skip stages.

Beyond Cabarete

Kite Tours

What level do I need for a kite tour?

A minimum intermediate level is required. You must be able to ride in both directions and upwind. La Boca suits intermediates, Punta Rucia suits intermediate and advanced riders, and Buen Hombre is best for experienced riders.

What is included in a KiteDR kite tour?

Every tour includes transport from Cabarete, equipment transport, an IKO-certified guide, safety equipment, and session photos. Equipment hire is available if you do not have your own kit.

How far is Punta Rucia from Cabarete?

Punta Rucia is approximately 2 hours west of Cabarete by road, in Puerto Plata province. The drive takes you along the north coast and is part of the adventure.

Can beginners join a kite tour?

No. A minimum intermediate ability is required for all tours. We recommend completing the 9-hour beginner course first and building confidence on Kite Beach before joining a tour.

How do I book a kite tour?
