IKO Level 1 Curriculum

What You Will Learn

Every session builds on the last. The IKO structure exists for a reason: each skill needs to be solid before the next one is safe to attempt.

01

Ground School

Kite theory, wind windows, meteorology, equipment setup, and safety release systems. You understand everything before you touch the water.

02

Body Dragging

Control the kite in the water without a board. Build power management and directional instinct in a safe environment.

03

Water Starts

Board recovery, foot placement, edging, and your first proper ride. Everything comes together in this session.

04

Independent Riding

Upwind riding, consistent direction changes, and the confidence to ride on your own. This is the IKO Level 1 sign-off.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in the beginner kiteboarding course?

The 9-hour IKO Level 1 course covers kite theory and meteorology, safety systems and self-rescue, body dragging upwind and downwind with and without a board, water starts, and first independent rides. All equipment is included: kite, board, harness, helmet, and impact vest. Maximum 2 students per instructor.

How long does it take to learn to kitesurf as a complete beginner?

Most students reach independent riding level after 9 hours of instruction delivered over 3 to 4 days. KiteDR paces the course this way because each skill needs time to consolidate before the next is introduced. Trying to compress it into one day is not recommended and not how IKO structures the curriculum.

Do I need to be fit or athletic to learn kiteboarding?

No. Modern kites are designed to do most of the work. A reasonable level of fitness and comfort in water is helpful, but you do not need to be an athlete. The majority of students in normal health complete the beginner course comfortably.

What should I bring to my first kiteboarding lesson?

Sunscreen, water, and a swimsuit. KiteDR provides all kite equipment, the board, harness, helmet, and impact vest. A rash guard is recommended to protect against sunburn and chafing. You can pick one up in Cabarete if needed.

Will I be riding independently by the end of the course?

The goal of the 9-hour IKO Level 1 course is to get you to independent riding level. Most students achieve this within the 9 hours. Conditions play a role, and if extra time is needed, this is discussed with your instructor.

What happens if wind conditions are not suitable on my lesson day?

KiteDR monitors conditions daily. If wind is insufficient or unsafe for your level, the session is rescheduled at no extra charge. Cabarete rarely experiences extended windless periods, particularly between December and August.

Is kiteboarding safe for beginners?

Yes, when taught correctly. Every KiteDR beginner session follows the IKO curriculum, which introduces risk in stages and does not advance students until each safety skill is solid. All students wear a helmet and impact vest. Instructors are trained in self-rescue and student rescue procedures. Kite Beach in Cabarete is an established teaching location with consistent side-shore wind, shallow water in the teaching zone, and no close-in obstacles. The single most important safety measure is a qualified instructor who holds the progression, which is exactly what the IKO system is designed to enforce.
