The Dominican Republic has become known as one of the top destinations for kitesurfing in the world. Kite DR is based at Kite Beach, Cabarete, on the North Coast of the island, which attracts kiteboarders from around the world due to its consistent winds and warm waters. Whether you are new to the sport or are more experienced, you will not be disappointed at Kite Beach.
Kite DR offers lessons for beginners and more advanced levels, supervision and equipment rental if required. All lessons are taught by fully qualified and experienced IKO instructors. At the end of your course, you will receive an IKO membership card showing the level achieved.
One of the misconceptions about kitesurfing is that you need to be very fit and have a lot of upper-body strength. This is not a requirement! The only criteria necessary to begin learning to kitesurf are the ability to swim and the enthusiasm to give it a go.
We do suggest you bring the following with you to your lesson: swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, a bottle of water, a t-shirt, sunglasses and a hat.
Lessons for beginners usually take up to nine hours in total. The lessons can be individual, with a friend or in a small group.
The first lessons take place on land only, as it is vitally important to learn about the wind, the equipment, the raising and controlling of a kite before you can safely venture into the water.
How to set up the equipment and use the safety system.
Learn about the wind and its effects.
How to launch and fly the kite wearing the harness.
How to control your kite in the water.
How to change direction and launch a crashed kite.
Body drag techniques some of which can be used to regain your board after a crash
We get you up on the board and teach you how to position your body and start on the water.
Controlling your speed and direction on the board.
Staying safe finding a good spot to launch and where to avoid.
Once you have completed the beginner course, you will need to practice everything that you learned. One way to get out on the water and feel more confident is through supervision.
We can provide you with an IKO-qualified assistant to watch over you and assist you with anything like launching and landing until you are ready to go alone. This is a much more affordable solution than continuing lessons. You can always book another lesson at any time if you need a refresher.
If you are a more experienced kitesurfer and want to progress further, you can take some of our advanced lessons.
There are several techniques that can be taught in these lessons depending on your level of experience such as
Jumps, Jump transitions, Board-Off, Board Grabs, Rolls, Kite Loops and more.
After assessing your level, we can discuss what you should be capable of and work out a personalised lesson plan.
